Full Day Island Tour including a visit to Filerimos Hill AND Butterfly Valley – duration 8 hours
We will start our tour with a drive around the walls of the Old Town of Rhodes – the biggest inhabited medieval town in Europe. It was built in 1300s from the knights of the order of St. John. The Medieval Town of Rhodes is inscribed in the World Heritage Sites List of UNESCO. This list recognizes the exceptional value of a cultural site so that it may be protected for the benefit of all Humanity.
If you want we can extend the duration of the tour with 1 hour and you can have also some free time to go through the Old town and explore it on your own.
Mandraki port is situated in the new part of the town where you will see some very impressive monumental buildings built by the Italians. Here at the harbor entrance is believed that once stood the great statue of the Colossus of Rhodes – one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World. We will stop for pictures of the area and you will be able also to enter and see the Church of the Annunciation which is the biggest Orthodox church in the town with very beautiful handmade paintings on the walls and spectacular chandeliers.
The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the most ambitious and tallest statue( between 30 to 33 meters high) of the Hellenistic period. The statue was a depiction of the Greek Titan Helios and was meant to celebrate the victory over the Dimitrios the Besieger (ruler of Cyprus) in 305 BC. Bearing a striking resemblance to the Statue of Liberty in the United States, the Colossus of Rhodes stood for no more than 56 years when a strong earthquake destroyed it. In the seventh century A.D., the Arabs conquered Rhodes and broke the remains of the Colossus up into smaller pieces and sold it as scrap metal. Legend says it took 900 camels to carry away the pieces. A sad end for what must have been a majestic work of art.
Now we will continue through the city and see more of the great Italian architecture. We will stop for pictures also at the Northen tip of the island where the Mediterranean and the Aegean seas meet each other. Then we will drive to Monthe Smith Hill where you can enjoy exceptional panoramic views of the city and the seashore, and also visit the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, the impressive open-air ancient Stadium and the Amphitheatre.
Next in our program is the famous Filerimos Hill. This place was used as the citadel of the ancient town of Ialyssos. The hill includes the foundations of the temple of Athena Polias, an Early Christian basilica, and a small subterranean Byzantine church. There is a road that sets off from the square that leads to the westernmost point of the hill. The road to Golgotha used by Catholics was dotted with holy icon-stands and bronze reliefs. At the end of the road of Martyrdom stands an 18 meters tall cross raised by the Italians in 1930..
For the Summer period between the end of June and mid-September, we can substitute the stop at Filerimos Hill with the beautiful Valley of Butterflies. The valley is a natural reserve, unique of its kind. You can enjoy a peaceful walk and admire the nature and the butterflies. Your driver will wait for you on the other side of the park. If you want to see both Filerimos Hill and the Butterfly Valley than we need to increase the duration of the tour.
Little before we reach the beautiful village of Lindos we will stop at a place for a panoramic view of the village together with its Acropolis on the top. Before the village we will also visit the picturesque St. Paul’s Bay. It is claimed that St Paul landed here in the year 51 AD to preach Christianity to the Rhodians. There is a small church built there after his name. We will make a stop for pictures to capture this stunning view.
You will have at least one hour stay to explore the village and to visit its famous Acropolis. The Acropolis in Lindos is the second most popular Acropolis in Greece after the Parthenon in Athens.
Upon request, during your tour, you can also have a stop at a pottery factory. You will be able to see how beautiful ceramics are made. Rhodes has a long history of pottery going back many centuries at least to the time of the ancient cities. Replicas of designs produced in those times are still been manufactured today together with new modern designs in a younger generation.
Now we will have a relaxing stop at an outstanding traditional Greek tavern. We can also arrange a visit to a spectacular seaside tavern near the sea so that you can enjoy your lunch and the sea breeze.
We will return back to the city of Rhodes and we can leave you directly to your hotel or ship or at any point of interest
Fantastic Tour of Rhodes
Nikolaus picked us up right on time and made us feel very comfortable. His presentation/knowledge of the sites he was showing us was perfect, very basic and just what we needed. He was very good and patient at answering the many questions we had for him. He made a stop at a road side kiosk to better answer some f our questions about olives and had us try some different kinds. Lunch along the ocean was a nice finishing touch for the tour. We really enjoyed Lindos, but more time would have been nice in order to walk up to the Acropolis. Overall a fantastic day and if you have Nikolaus as a driver you are in for a great day!
Rhodes Taxi Tour Was A Trip Highlight Day!
My family group of 5 took two very comfortable Mercedes Sedan cars with drivers for a full day Rhodes Island tour. Our drivers were Nicolas and Dimetri were awesome. The met us promptly at our cruise dock and got us into the old town medieval early and took us to many spots before they close this to traffic. We went all over the island of Rhodes and saw sights that most miss. For most of the major tourist sites we went to they got us there before the crowds which was much appreciated. We ended at a traditional Taverna and had the lunch of a lifetime at the top of a cliff under a vine and tree covered canopy with homemade everything. My family group loved this tour and I would recommend it to all.
A wonderful port to see a lot of history
Dominic our tour guide was waiting for us at the port. He had a very nice clean cool car. We went to see all the sites around then headed to Lindos the most important town of the Island. We had so much fun watching the people riding donkeys up to the acropolis. Their expressions were priceless. We stopped along the path to have a drink the view was lovely. We stopped by a family owned ceramic company there is no pressure to buy anything. Dominic was great!!!!
Loved the tour
We’d a tour – our driver knowledge of the island and the places he took us made us fall in love with Rhodes. We had a great day, visited many sites and a great meal by the seaside. Definitely recommend this company.
Great driver…excellent tour
We thoroughly enjoyed our experience in Rhodes. The driver picked us up promptly and we were able to drive inside the city walls for a quick look before heading out to tour the island, which was beautiful. We stopped by the harbor and some places where there were wonderful views. We enjoyed a visit to a place where we were able to see a vase being made by the potter and then viewed beautiful hand-made pottery. Then we were off to Lindos, where we enjoyed free time and were picked up exactly when and where indicated. We were returned to a gate just outside Old Town so that we could continue our exploration of this wonderful place. Our driver, Michael, was professional, friendly, personable, informative, and spoke perfect English. We are so pleased that we took this excursion during our cruise stop in Rhodes.
