Our tour starts with visiting the picturesque Filerimos Hill. Reaching the top you will be greeted by dozens of peacocks, running wild and creating an ethereal atmosphere of this place. The hill include the foundations of the temple of Athena Polias, an Early Christian basilica and a small subterranean Byzantine church. There is a road that sets off from the square that leads to the westernmost point of the hill. The road to Golgotha used by Catholics was dotted with holy icon-stands and bronze reliefs. At the end of the road of Martyrdom stands an 18 metres tall cross raised by the Italians in 1930. Once you reached the cross you will be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of the Aegean Sea and the West Coast of the Island.
Leaving behind the Filerimos Hill next in our program are the ruins of Ancient Kamiros, which was one of the first three cities build on the island (together with Lindos and Ialysos). With the foundation of the City of Rhodes in 408 BC, Kamiros started to decline. Nowadays it is a very important archaeological site, as the ancient village is preserved in excellent condition. Important findings from the area are part of the collections of the British Museum and the Louvre. You will have time to explore the ruins of ancient Kamiros and admire the magnificent view from the hill.
From here we will continue our drive on the West Coast of the Island and next we will visit the ruins of Kritinia castle. The castle of Kritinia(Kastello) is a Venetian castle built in 1472 on a steep rock 131m high. It offers a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea, the West Coast of Rhodes, the island of Chalki and some other deserted islands. The castle was built during the period of the Knights of the Order of St. John and this place was chosen because of its stratigic location and 360-degree observation view of the sea.
Surrounded by the beautiful landscape you will really enjoy your visit.
From there we will continue our drive among the West Coast of the island and our next stop will be little before we reach the castle of Monolithos. From this point you will be able to soak in the spectacular panoramic view of the catle and grab memorable panoramic photographs before heading to the castle itself.
Next in our program is the castle of Monolithos which was built by the Knights of St. John in the 1480 AD in order to protect the island from attacks and is placed on a rock 100 m. high. In old times, this castle was considered one of the four more powerful fortresses on the island, but today only the external walls fortifications remain. Inside the perimeter of the walls there are two 15th century chapels, St. Panteleimon and St. George. Today the castle is widely ruined but it offers great views of the sea and the two islets opposite to it. Access to the castle is by a staircase cut into the rock. In fact the path towards the castle is so rough that no one has ever managed to conquer it.
We will have at least 40 min stop here so you will be able to reach and explore the ruins of the castle and admire the beauty of the place.
Our next stop is the picturesque and lively village of Embona. Embona is a mountainous village in Attavyros Mountain, it is the centre of the local wine industry on Rhodes. Embonas may not have any picturesque architectural features; however, it is one of the most popular suggestions for a trip inland in Rhodes that combines folklore, a lively atmosphere and good food.
Here we will stop first for a wine tasting at some of the local winery producers where you will be able to taste a big variety of fresh wines. The wine tasting is absolutely free and you aren't obliged to purchase anything. Of course a bottle of wine will be a wonderful souvenir from Rhodes, or maybe a bottle of original olive oil with no conservantes, or just a small bag of mountin herbs for your tea in the winter. All products are fully natural and with origin from this gorgeous mountin village.
Next in our program will be a relaxing stop at a spectacular traditional Greek tavern inside the village of Embona for a great lunch. All ingredients used are topical, from the region and you will be pleasantly surprised by the freshness and the taste of the local cuisine.
If you prefer we can also choose a seaside tavern for you on the beautiful West Coast of the island.
At the end we will return you back to your starting point or we can leave you at any other pont of intereset.
